About CensusMapper
CensusMapper is a Geographic Information System (GIS) centered around Canadian census data. With CensusMapper you can:
- browse maps made by users based on Canadian census data
- create interactive Canada-wide custom maps based on census data and share them with others
- explore census variables for specific geographies
- explore census data by mapping user-defined functions based on census variables
- download census variables through our map-based interface or the cancensus R package
- enrich your own datasets with Canadian census data
Data on CensusMapper can be freely linked to or downloaded. The data is governed by the Statistics Canada Open Data Licence. Statistics Canada must be acknowledged as the source when using the data; acknowledgement of CensusMapper is optional. The geographic data has undergone some processing and may differ from data originally released by Statistics Canada.
Users of the R programming language might benefit from the {cancensus} R package for accessing and analysing census data.

FAQ
What is the licensing?
Data on CensusMapper is governed by the Statistics Canada Open Data Licence. The geographic data has undergone some processing and may differ from the data originally released by Statistics Canada.
How do I acknowledge CensusMapper data?
Statistics Canada must be acknowledged as the source when using the data. Acknowledgement of CensusMapper is optional.
How can I download CensusMapper data?
The graphical API interface facilitates picking census variables and regions and downloading the associated data. Users of the R programming language might benefit from the {cancensus} R package. CensusMapper is not designed for bulk data download across many variables for entire provinces or all of Canada — for comprehensive data needs we recommend downloading directly from Statistics Canada.
Can I overlay my own data over CensusMapper maps?
This functionality is not currently publicly available. We simply don't have the resources at this time to polish up the interface and make it generally available.
