Child Poverty

This map shows the percentage of children under 18 living in poverty. A household is considered poor if it falls below the cutoffs listed at the bottom. Also refer to the map of children under 6 in poverty. The scatter plot gives another view how children in poverty vs all children are distributed within the current map view. The 2011 Census found that 17.3% of children in Canada living in poverty. Among the provincial level Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia had the highest child poverty rates with over 20%. Alberta had the lowest at 13.4%. Generally speaking, child poverty rates tend to be higher in rural regions in Canada, but the pattern gets more complicated when zooming in to the municipal level around the lower mainland and Vancouver Island. In the Toronto region child poverty rats follow more predictable patterns Around the Alberta - BC border near Calgary we see significantly higher child poverty rates on rural the BC side. Zooming into Vancouver we see surprisingly high concentrations of child poverty on the west side. To better understand this we can dig in deeper into Dissemination Areas, while being aware of possible non-return and sampling biases that become emphasized when looking at finer regions. When analyzing the data it can be useful to refer to the map of tenant households and capital gains income, which is not included in the income numbers used to determine poverty levels. In some cases the child poverty in affluent areas may be explained by unreported income. A similar analysis around Calgary reveals that child poverty is concentrated around downtown and the newer northwest, northeast and east suburbs. Toronto reveals a similar pattern. Also refer to the map of all people in poverty. As always, out maps are Canada wide. User the search bar, zoom and pan to explore child poverty in other regions of Canada.
