This map shows the percentage of people that moved within the last 5 years prior to 2011 for each area.

38.6% of Canada's population lived in a different place in May 2006 than they did in May 2011. Among the provinces Northwest Territories had the highest level of mobility at 48.7%, Newfoundland and Labrador had the lowest at 29%.

In Vancouver we see high mobility around downtown areas, the rapid transit corridors and the universities. There is a high correlation to the percentage of rental households as mobility tends to be higher for rental households. But there are also many exceptions that don't follow this pattern.

To explore different reasons for high or low mobility we can zoom in, keeping in mind that individual area results may get skewed by NHS non-return or sampling biases.

Areas can show up as having a high percentage of the population move there for different reasons. The Olympic Village for example had a high percentage of people move there because of lots of new housing being built in that Dissemination Area. Some student housing areas on UBC campus have 100% of the population moving within a 5 year period as they complete their program of study.

Vancouver's West End, with it's high proportion of renters, features generally high mobility but also hosts relatively stable pockets.

The condo developments between Granville Island and Charleston Park stand out as comparatively low numbers of people moving in.
