Population Change 2016-2021

This map shows the relative population change between the 2016 and 2021 censuses in each area. Overall Canada's population grew by 5.2% since the 2016 census. Compare this to the corresponding map for 2016-2021, the map of change in dwellings, the change in households map, and the composition of population change map. The population grew in all provinces except in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories, where population dropped by 1.8% and 1.7%, respectively. Population growth was strongest in Yukon Territory which grew by 12.1%, followed by Prince Edward Island at 8%, BC at 7.6% and Ontario at 5.8%. At the Census District level there is considerable variation, with strongest population gains in rural areas and areas surrounding the largest CMAs.
