Components of Population Change

This map breaks the change in the population in each area into three components: population change because of a change in the number of dwelling units (assuming the rate of unoccupied by usual residents units did not change) population change because of a change in the rate of unoccupied by usual residents dwelling units population change because of a change in the household size Use the buttons to select which component to view or hover over a region to see all components for that region visualized in the widget. This is a preliminary version that use the total population instead of just the population in private households. We will update this map as more census data gets released, including the population in private households. The change in population in private households in each region is the sum of the changes attributed to each factor. More details on the specific way the population change was split up is on our blog. For details and context on how to interpret dwelling units not occupied by usual residents please refer to our map on this topic. This scatterplot gives another view of the data and shows how population and dwelling growth correlate in each region. As always, this map is Canada-wide. The map uses custom geographies built to ensure availability of data across both the 2021 and (adjusted) 2016 censuses.
