Renter Households
This map shows the percentage of households that are renting. Compare this to the corresponding map based on 2016 data, corresponding map based on 2011 data and the one based on 2006 data. In the City of Vancouver 54.5% of households rented, up from 53.1% in 2016, and 51.5% in 2011 and 51.9% in 2006. In Metro Vancouver the rate was 37.8%. Among the larger Canadian Metropolitan areas Montreal takes the lead with 45.6% renters, jumping to 63.6% in the City of Montreal. Toronto comes in lower than Vancouver with 48.1% for the city and 34.9% for Metro Toronto. Calgary clocks in at 29.5% for the metro area and 31.2% for the city proper. The following scatter plot gives an indication of the distribution of median monthly tenant shelter costs in relation to the proportion of renters in each region.
