Core Housing Need

This map shows the proportion of households in Core Housing Need in each region. Among the larger metro regions, Vancouver has the highest share of households in housing need at 16.9%, followed by Toronto at 16.1%, Edmonton at 10.6%, Calgary at 9.8%, Ottawa at 9.4% and Montréal at 7.9%. Compare that to the map of just renter households in Core Housing Need or owner households in Core Housing Need. Also consider the map of unacceptable housing. A household with income great than zero and shelter-cost-to-income ratio between 0 and 100% is considered in Core Housing Need if it falls below at least one of the adequacy standards affordability (spending 30% or less of total income on shelter cost) suitability (not overcrouded according to the Natonal Occupancy Standard) adequate (not in need of major repairs) and at the same time is not a student-lead household between the ages of 15 to 29 with income not enough to afford an alternative suitable and adequate dwelling in the same census district.
