This map shows the makeup of children under 15 in each area. The colour in each area reflects the relative mix of children under 5 (red), children 5 to 9 years old (green) and children aged 10 to 14 (blue). In the Vancouver area Downtown, as well as the Skytrain corridors in Burnaby and Richmond stand out as areas with especially high proportions of children under 5. Toronto also shows patterns of higher proportion of young children in the downtown area. The same is true for Calgary where we also see clear patterns of higher ratio of older children in the outer suburbs. This indicates that while couples have no reservations starting families in the downtown areas, as children get older they tend to relocate to other areas. We can explore where children live further by mapping the percentage of households with children at home or the density of children under 15 per km². We can also look for clues in the build environment by, for example, mapping the percentage of dwellings with three or more bedrooms. We grey out areas where the there are less than 40 children in those age groups AS the ratio becomes very unreliable due to statistical rounding.
