Immigrant Generation

This map shows the makeup of Canadian residents depending on how many are first generation (red), second generation (green) or third or more generation immigrants, or First Nations (blue). Overall in Canada, 26.4% are first generation immigrants, 17.6% are second generation and 56.9% are third generation or more. Compare that to the corresponding map from 2011 where the makeup was 22%. 17.4%, and 60.7%, respectively. Accordingly Canada is mostly dominated by blue. However the makeup of the large metropolitan areas is quite different, with Toronto made up with 79.7% first and second generation immigrants, up from just over 75% in 2011. Vancouver follows with 72.5% first and second generation, up from 68% in 2011 Calgary sports 55.8% first and second generation immigrants, followed by Montreal and Ottawa with 46.2% and 42.8%. Metro Vancouver's Electoral Area A, mostly the area around UBC, is the census subdivision with the highest rate of first generation immigrants at 67.6%, closely followed byRichmond at 65.9%. Markham and Richmond Hill in Metro Toronto are the only two other census subdivisions with shares of first generation immigrants over 60%.
