To celebrate National Aboriginal Day we examine the geographic distribution of Canada's 1.4 million people with aboriginal identity. This map shows the proportion of the population that listed an aboriginal identity.

Among the provinces Nunavut has 86% of it's population with aboriginal identity, followed by Northwest Territories with 52%. Quebec and Prince Edward Island have the lowest proportion of aboriginal identity with 1.8% and 1.6%, respectively.

Generally speaking rural areas have higher proportions of aboriginal identitiy, but especially prairie cities like Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon have high proportions of people with aboriginal identity. Edmonton and Calgary come in with somewhat lower numbers, which dip down even more for west coast cities like Victoria or Vancouver. Toronto or Montreal come in lower than that.
