Secondary suite density

This map shows the density of occupied secondary suites. The census codes a single family home with a secondary suite as two "duplex" units. Standard census release data only reports on occupied units, and secondary suites are the most empty form of housing in most of Canada. For this map we are interested in the density of occupied secondary suites, which we estimate out of the stock of all occupied "duplex" and "single detached" housing using the following formula: suite density = ( /2)/( /2 + ) We grey out areas with fewer than 10 occupied single family homes to avoid skewing the map by small denominators. The shares estimated here are systematically biased upward because homes with empty suites should be counted as single detached, where the suite has been absorbed into the main unit. It nonetheless gives a representation of the geographic distribution of secondary suites.
