Active Transportation
This map show the mode share of walk, bike and transit to work. Metro Montreal and Metro Toronto take the lead among the large Canadian metropolitan areas with 29% of people using active transportation to get to work. Metro Vancouver follows close behind with 28%, Metro Calgary and Metro Edmonton lag behind with 22% and 17%. At the municipal level, Montreal and Metro Toronto comes in at 48%, edging out Vancouver at 47% and Toronto at 46%. Calgary and Edmonton are far behind at 24% and 21%. We observe that active transportation mode share correlates strongly with the percentage of tenant households in each respective region. We also see that areas with lower income tend to have higher active transportation use, but this correlation is generally not as strong. Also compare to the bike to work mode share map and transit mode share map, or the corresponding map based on 2006 data or the one based on 2016 data.
