Lower, Middle and Upper Income

This map shows the proportion of income earners in the lower, middle and upper income brackets. For the purpose of this map we define the 30 to 70 percentile of the Canadian income distribution as "middle income", judged on the income of their respective economic families, or their individual income for persons not in economic families. There are some surprising differences at the provincial and regional levels that can lead to high incomes in rural areas with large resource extraction industries. Looking at Census Metropolitan Areas we can observe interesting spacial segregation of these income groups in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Zoom, pan and use the search bar to investigate areas that interest you. Alternatively we can look at household income grouped at specific dollar amounts to get a similar map. Also refer to the map of income composition to see how much income was derived from full time employment, part time employment or other sources, as well as the map of income equality in each region.
