Rental deserts
This map takes the definitions of "rental desert", "mixed-tenure communities" and "high-rental neighbourhoods" and applies them to the Canadian 2021 census to classify regions. Following the paper, we classify rental deserts as those where less than 20% of the housing stock is available to renters, mixed-tenure communities to be those where at least 20% and no more than 80% of the stock is rental, and neighbourhoods with at least 80% rental housing as high-rental neighbourhoods. Our definition varies slightly from that used in the paper as we ignore vacant homes not lived in during census day. Geographically, rental deserts accumulate around the fringes of metro areas. Their overall prevalence varies by metro area as shown in this overview graph: !Rental deserts
