Bedrooms vs households

This map shows the distribution of the share of 0 and 1 bedroom dwellings vs the share of one-person households. 0 bedroom (studio) homes are generally considered to be adequate for 1-person households, 1 bedroom homes are generally considered adequate for singles or couple households. In this map we take a narrow view and only look at the relation of these dwellings to 1-person households and ignore couple households. Still, most areas come in along or below the diagonal, so with more or similar share of 1-person households compared to 0 or 1 person dwelling units. But when zooming in we can find a few exceptions. Generally the correlation between the share of one-bedroom homes and one-person households is quite strong, with the central parts of cities have a higher and outlying areas a lower share of both, as can be observed in Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal, and Calgary. We can also explore the two dimensions separately.
