Components of Population Change
We have mapped the population change for each census area between the 2011 and 2016 censuses. With this map, we want break the population change in each area into three components: population change because of a change in the number of dwelling units (assuming the rate of unoccupied by usual residents units did not change) population change because of a change in the rate of unoccupied by usual residents dwelling units population change because of a change in the household size The colour only depends on the relative magnitude of the effects and ignores the sign. Hover over an area to see in which direction the three factors are contributing to population change, as well as to see how much population was added or lost because of each factor. The population change for each region is the sum of the changes attributed to each factor. More details on the specific way the population change was split up is on our blog. As always, this map is Canada-wide. The map uses custom geographies built to ensure availability of data across both the 2011 and 2016 censuses.
