Married vs Common Law

This map shows the proportion of couple families that are married as opposed to common law. Canada wide, 80% of couple families are married and 20% are common law. Green areas show where the proportion of married couple families is above the Canadian average and purple areas show where the proportion is below the average. In general, southern areas in Canada have above average levels of married family couples, whereas norther areas tend to have above average levels of common law couples. In cities like Vancouver or Toronto we notice how common law couples are much more common in central areas. Montreal stands out with a very high portion of common law couple families, as well as high proportions of common law families in rural areas throughout Quebec. In urban areas there is a strong correlations between areas with higher proportion of couple families and areas with higher proportion of households with household maintainer younger than 35 as evident in the following scatter plot.
