Total Change in Non-Primary Residences
This map shows the total change in non-primary residences ("not occupied by usual residence") dwelling between 2011 and 2016. Also refer to the map of the relative change in non-primary residence dwellings. The map is best viewed at the Census Tract or higher aggregation level, but it is useful to zoom in further the understand what may have caused changes in specific regions. One should keep in mind that Dissemination Area and especially Dissemination Block level data is prone to census quality issues, especially when taking differences between censuses. Nevertheless, fine grained data can be quite enlightening. For example, the big change in unoccupied units at UBC can be largely explained by student housing getting built or re-classified. Similarly, recent discussions in Vancouver about a spike in unoccupied dwellings in the Marine Gateway neighbourhood can be largely explained by unoccupied units in the MC2 development that got completed just before the census. As always, our maps are Canada wide. Just search, zoom or pan to view whatever region interests you.
