Change in School Age Children
This map shows the percentage change in school age children between the 2011 and 2016 censuses. The age brackets don't line up perfectly with the school age cutoffs, but the change in population gives a general sense of the change in school age population for each of the age brackets. Green colours indicate an increase in the population of the given age bracket, purple colours indicate a decrease. This map only the change in the size of each age bracket, for understanding migration patterns of children please refer to our net migration by age group map. For the City of Vancouver it is interesting to note that while the population in the 10 to 14 year old and 15 to 17 year old age brackets decreased between 2011 and 2016, the one in the 5 to 9 year old age bracket increased. Adding in Musqueam 2 and UBC, which together with the City of Vancouver from School District 39, the 5 to 9 cohort grew by 660 children, whereas the census counted 1,155 fewer children in the 10 to 14 year old cohort. The 5 to 9 year old cohort in the City of Vancouver growing by 2.2% is in contrast to the time period between 2006 and 2011, where the count of children in each 5 year age cohort in the City of Vancouver dropped. However, the number of 5 to 9 year olds in 2016 was still 3.9% below the 2006 level. This map cannot distinguish children attending public school, private school or getting home schooled. Use the age group selection to determine which age group to visualize geographically, hover over a region to see how the age groups in that region changed. Zoom in and out to vary the geographic aggregations levels, and pan or use the geolocation or searach function to explore other regions of Canada.
