Institutional Residents
This map shows the percentage of the population residing in are collective dwellings. Most census data is based only on people in private dwellings, which excludes these people. Not counted are people that were only temporarily residing in collective dwellings on census day, but had a usual place of residence in a private household. Canada wide 2% of the population resided in collective dwellings, Manitoba and Saskatchewan lead the provinces with 2.9% and 2.5% of usual residents housed in collective dwellings. The Census Dictionary defined collective dwellings as one of the following: Hospital Nursing home and/or residence for senior citizens Residential care facility such as a group home for persons with disabilities or addictions Shelter Correctional or custodial facility Lodging or rooming house Religious establishment such as a convent, monastery or seminary Hutterite colony Establishment with temporary accommodation services such as a hotel, campground, YMCA, Ronald McDonald House or hostel Other establishment such as a school residence, military base, work camp or vessel
