Renter Households

This map shows the percentage of households that are renting. Compare this to the corresponding map based on 2011 data and the one based on 2006 data. In the City of Vancouver 53.1% of the population rented in 2016, up significantly from 51.5% in 2011 and 51.9% in 2006. In Metro Vancouver the rate was 36.3%. Among the larger Canadian Metropolitan areas Montreal takes the lead with 44.3% renters, jumping to 63.3% in the City of Montreal. Toronto comes in lower than Vancouver with 47.2% for the city and 33.5% for Metro Toronto. Calgary clocks in at 27% for the metro area and 28.6% for the city proper. The following scatter plot gives an indication of the distribution of median monthly tenant shelter costs in relation to the proportion of renters in each region.
