People per Household
This map colours each region by the proportion of 1 person, 2 person and 3 or more person households. Compare this to the corresponding map based on 2011 data. Overall in Canada, 28.2% of households are 1 person, 34.4% are 2 person and 37.4% are three or more person households. This changed from 27.6%, 34.1%, and 38.3% in 2011 and further illustrates the general trend in declining household size. Among the provinces Nunavut stands out with the highest proportion of 3+ person households at 61.8%, although down from 63.5% in 2011. Quebec has the highest proportion of 1 person households at 33.3%, up from 32.2% in 2011, and Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest number of 2 person households at 40.6%, up from 39.4% in 2011. We generally see that 1 person households tend to cluster in the urban cores, although the degree of segregation by household size varies considerably with Montreal painting a fairly mixed picture throughout whereas Toronto and Vancouver displaying a more polarized pattern.
